Helping Babies Breathe Program

The Helping Babies Breathe (HHB) Program was started by Board Member Barbara Engers, a Registered Nurse specializing in Neonatal Intensive Care. The HHB Program was designed to teach neonatal resuscitation to the Comadronas (Midwives) in the resource limited setting of Guatemala.

The HHB Program provides classes for the Comadronas (Midwives) to attend where they learn valuable new information and skills for the care of babies who need assistance at birth (approximately 10% of babies require some assistance at birth). These classes also cover early breast-feeding, hand hygiene, umbilical cord care and avoiding early bathing. The age of the Comadronas (Midwives) who attend range from 39 to 80 where it’s been found that the older women are mentoring the younger women. One of the Midwives who attended was 68 years old and learned to be a Comadrona from her mother. We found out that she had been delivering babies for 50 years and had delivered 8 out of 9 of her own children. We have recently broadened the class participants to include Firefighters who are also called upon frequently to deliver babies. They are very grateful to have the opportunity to learn these skills to help them in future birthing situations.

Donations are always welcome to help cover the cost of the Resuscitation Bags and the NeoNatalie Instruction Doll used in these valuable learning experiences. For more information about this program, email us at: information@heartsinmotion.org.
