Frequently Asked Questions

Who can volunteer?
H.I.M. needs all types of volunteers: Medical professionals, skilled tradesmen, EMTs, firefighters, and people who speak Spanish fluently enough to act as interpreters. If you don’t feel you fit into one of these categories, don’t worry; a willing heart is your most valuable tool to be a team member. There is a place for everyone!

The following medical/dental specialties are most frequently used: anesthesia and nurse anesthesia, dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, plastic surgery, nursing, and physical therapy. We are always looking for other specialties to join our Hearts In Motion team.

Where does H.I.M. go on their trips?
H.I.M. primarily goes to Zacapa, Guatemala.
What do H.I.M. volunteers do on the trips?
Each trip has a different focus. Medical/Dental personnel conduct clinics, perform surgeries, and participate in health education. Construction crews build playgrounds, schools, and other buildings needed in the local area. Training is conducted for local firemen and other specialties.
How long is each trip?
Most trips last approximately 10 days.
Can family members come?
Spouses and families who wish to accompany volunteers are also asked to volunteer their time while the trip is in session. There are many positions available that do not require special training.
Are there any expenses for volunteers?
Volunteers are responsible for purchasing their air travel to Guatemala City. They also pay a team fee which covers all transportation within the country, and room and board. The team fee is considered a tax-deductible donation. Contact the H.I.M. office for more information.
How are credentialing and insurance issues handled?
The following documents are required documents for medical/dental practitioners:

  • Physicians and dentists need to submit a curriculum vitae
  • Registered nurses need to submit a copy of your nursing license

Travel and health insurance are covered by each individual through personal insurance plans.

How do I start the process of volunteering on a trip?
Call our office or fill out an application that you can find online.
How do I get started?
Call our office or fill out an electronic application available here.
How do I prepare for a trip?
Please see the information provided under “Mission Trips.”
What denomination is Hearts In Motion?
Hearts In Motion is a non-denominational agency.
Are the trips safe?
HIM staff makes arrangements for security when traveling at night. Our hotels are all gated and enclosed.
What are the projects we will be doing on the mission trips?
This varies according to what trip you are traveling on. We list what the trips consist of under the trip dates. If you need any kind of specific information, please feel free to contact the office.
How far in advance should I make my flight arrangements?
As soon as you know for sure that you will be joining a mission trip, you should start looking up flights. If you see a great deal, I recommend booking it right away. If you wait until the trip is only a couple of weeks away, the price of the tickets tends to increase tremendously.
If I am sponsoring a child, will I be able to see and give gifts to my child?
Four times a year, we make plans to bring gifts to the children in our school sponsorship program. This is usually in February, March, July and October. If you are unable to volunteer on a mission trip, you are more than welcome to send your gift to our Headquarters and we will bring it down for you. If you are sponsoring a child in our weekly feed, you can definitely send gifts to our office to bring down, or give the gifts yourself on a mission trip.
Are interpreters provided?
Hearts In Motion is a volunteer based organization. So Spanish-speakers are always a plus to have. All our staff speaks Spanish.
Will there be an opportunity to shop for souvenirs?
Yes. At the end of the mission trip, we travel to Antigua. There you can buy souvenirs, take tours, and relax.
When are trip payments due?
The balance of the trip is due 1 month before the trip. If you have problems meeting this deadline, please contact our office.
