While in Colombia, Karen Scheeringa was introduced to a young man who had lost his family and both legs in an avalanche that covered his village.

Hearts In Motion made arrangements for Jose to be brought to the United States where he received new legs and a new family. Jose began playing wheelchair basketball first with a local team, the Rolling Rebels, and then joined the Hearts In Motion team.His amazing skills on the court led him to world wide recognition.

While on the USA Junior National Wheelchair Basketball team his team traveled to and took first place in international competition! He has also traveled to Colombia and throughout the US playing wheelchair basketball. Jose received a basketball scholarship to Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and is currently majoring in Spanish.
