When Rosa was 10-years old she was brutally attacked by a local man. After molesting her he tried to kill her by cutting off her arms and stabbing her in the throat and head. He left Rosa for dead by the side of the road. God gave her the strength to get up and go to a neighbor’s house for help. The small hospital near her village was not equipped to perform the surgery she needed, so she was transferred to the city hospital. After the initial surgery she still needed prosthetics for her arms and further plastic surgery on her face. Hearts In Motion brought Rosa to the United States to obtain the medical care she needed. After many months of surgery and rehabilitation, she returned to Guatemala to find that her father had died. Her mother was not able to care for her, so Hearts In Motion arranged for her to return to the US.

She was placed with a loving foster family, who later adopted her. During her stay in the United States, she completed her high school education and attended Purdue Calumet University, majoring in Spanish and Education. Rosa had lost touch with her mother when she moved due to their poor economic situation but continued to miss her and wanted to thank her for her sacrifice. In March of 2004, Karen Scheeringa, Founder of Hearts In Motion, arranged for Rosa to return to Guatemala where she was reunited with her family. They have spent many hours catching up and Rosa was finally able to tell her mother thank you.

I don't know what your destiny would be, but one thing I do know: The only ones
among you who would be really happy are those who have sought and found who to serve.
