Imagine placing a pair of reading glasses on the face of an elderly woman, and watching her read her bible for the first time in decades. Or watching the expression of a nearsighted man whose entire life was a blur before he received his first pair of glasses. This has been my passion and service for several years and I have been honored to bring along with me many family members and friends who have become part of the team.
As part of the general medical clinics that travel to different villages each day, the eyeglass team tests vision and fits our Guatemalan clinic visitors with donated eyeglasses. I received training designed for non-medical mission personnel from The Lion’s Club in Midland, Texas, Visual Compassion in Tomball, Texas, and from my personal optometrist.
This is where I need your help! If you have any reading glasses, prescription eye glasses or sunglasses that are still in wearable condition, please consider sending them to Guatemala with me! Or, if you don’t have an extra pair, please consider picking up a pair of readers the next time you visit the market or drugstore. I will clean, repair and measure the prescriptions. Small repairs are fine — missing nosepieces or loose screws, for example, but I can’t make major repairs or replace missing lenses.
If you have any questions or glasses to donate, please contact me. Thank you for your help.
