The Pueblo Modelo Daycare
In 2018, Hearts In Motion (HIM) partnered with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (GSLC) to open a daycare at the Learning Center in Pueblo Modelo.
The Pueblo Modelo Daycare was established to prepare children for the Guatemalan grade school system. This is an all-year round daycare except for some holiday closings. The daycare operates five days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The children receive two nutritious meals a day plus a snack. In addition, the children have access to medical, vision and dental care when volunteer medical teams travel to Guatemala.
Since the Pueblo Modelo Daycare started, there have been 23 children who have graduated and gone on to thrive in the grade school system.
Changes Made Due to COVID
Due to Covid, the Pueblo Modelo Daycare was forced to close temporarily in 2020. However, the staff continued to serve hot take away lunches during the week for the children. The hot lunches included vegetables from the garden and fruits from the trees planted a few years ago at the Learning Center.
In 2020 and 2021, the daycare staff also provided at home learning sessions for the children. In addition to the home learning visits, the children who were graduating from the daycare and going to first grade received extra tutoring. The objective was to better prepare the children for 1st grade so that they were not behind due to the pandemic. The tutoring sessions were held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The kids who were struggling received about 1 hour of tutoring. The kids who were more “advanced” and/or more prepared for first grade received 30-minute sessions.
On January 10, 2022, the daycare reopened and added 17 new children. The new schedule for 2022 has the children attending the daycare on alternate days. However, lunches are being served to all the children every day. Hearts In Motion provided containers to children to take home their meals and drinks. Some kids have lunch at the daycare on the day that they are attending class. Others come to pick up their lunches on the day that they are not at the daycare.
