Rehabilitation Services have been provided to patients in Guatemala by Hearts In Motion since 2002. Initially services were provided only by therapists from the United States that came on mission trips, many times working on picnic benches with little or no supplies. In 2005 however, full time services were initiated through HIM, staffed by Guatemalan therapists, trained in physical and occupational therapy. Patients are seen in three free standing therapy clinics. In addition, multiple groups of students from physical, occupational and speech therapy programs in the United States travel to work in Guatemala. They work with the local therapists at HIM’s clinics as well as in local “pop-up” clinics in areas where therapy is difficult to obtain. Additional training for therapists and families in Guatemala on a variety of topics is also frequently provided by the groups.
Kevin O’Halloran Rehabilitation Center
Kevin O’Halloran is an orthopedic surgeon that has traveled with Hearts In Motion for over 30 years, providing surgical interventions. He saw a need to provide ongoing follow-up therapy for his patients and the community in general. In 2005, Hearts In Motion opened the Kevin O’Halloran Rehabilitation Center providing therapy services to the residents of Zacapa, Guatemala and the surrounding communities.
The clinic is open three days per week, staffed by a Guatemalan therapist. No patient is ever refused treatment. The clinic also provides adaptive equipment such as walkers and crutches to patients.
HIM Physical Therapy Center – Gualan
In 2012, Hearts In Motion opened a second therapy center in Gualan after seeing a need for services in the area. The clinic is housed within the Hearts In Motion Campus which also houses a Nutrition Center, Senior Center, temporary housing for orphaned or abandoned children and the Music In Motion program.
Services are provided on a donation basis to patients from the area and from as far as two hours away . The clinic also provides support for children in the Nutrition Center or Reese House that have disabilities or are demonstrating developmental delays.
HIM Casa de Rehabilitacion – El Paraiso
2015 brought additional expansion of therapy services by Hearts In Motion in Guatemala. Initially housed within the HIM center in Teculutan, a third clinic was opened in Barrio El Paraiso, Teculutan to serve patients from the department of Zacapa as well as neighboring departments. This clinic offers extended hours four days per week, to allow workers an opportunity to receive services. Similar to the other clinics, services are provided on a donation basis by a Guatemalan therapist
