Our Mission: Empowering our volunteers to change lives of people in poverty.
A Message from Karen Scheeringa Parra, Executive Director:
Dear Friends & Supporters of Hearts In Motion (HIM),
In cooperation with government and local Health Department officials (both in the US and Guatemala), as well as safety concerns for our staff and all those that we serve, HIM is making the following temporary closures in the US:
TOGETHER WE CHANGE LIVES
To Help with the General Support of H.I.M, choose an amount below:
The Reese House in Gualan
An orphanage in our Gualan community that provides love and care for children who were living on the steets. The Reese House is currently home to children who do not have parents or have been abandoned. They are loved and cared for by local staff who nurture them to grow up and become role models in the community. For more information click on the image .
Gualan Nutrition Center Since it's opening, we have taken in hundreds of infants desperately in need of food and medical care. After months, sometimes years of love and nurturing, many have been returned to their families healthy and able to flourish. HIM has a very strong role in training and helping provide proper equipment to firefighters in Guatemala and Ecuador. For more information click on the image on the wheel.
School SponsorshipEducation is fundamental to change. HIM partners sponsors with children who would otherwise not be given the opportunity of an education. Many of our sponsors later join us on a trip and find great joy seeing the impact! For more information click on the image on the Wheel.Education is fundamental to change. Those who Serve
The impact on those serving is as great as the impact on those served. Learn more, do more and become more. Join us for a week! For more information click on the image on the Wheel.
HIM Local Community Support
HIM is always ready to serve those in need. For example, following a fire in the Sr Housing Authority in Gary, Ind, HIM was there to clean and unpack belongings of the effected Srs, and to shower them with food and love..
Gualan - Seniors are often left alone and forgotten. Therefore, once a week, HIM invites Seniors for lunch and a time to socialize together. They are also given opportunities to help in an environment where they are valued and respected.
SERVING IN GUATEMALA FOR 35 YEARS
In 2004, HIM was performing a free medical clinic in Gualan, Guatemala. After seeing nearly 300 people, we were getting ready to close the door when a young father walked in carrying his 13 year old daughter who was too weak to walk. The entire team stood shocked as he unwrapped his 23 lb daughter, Hilda, a living skeleton. When I asked why they had waited so long to get help for their daughter, why they had not gone by bus to the hospital 2.5 hours away, they looked at me like I had two heads. That ride, they explained, would have cost $2.75. They had 8 other children who would go without food if they spent that money on one child. That day, it was decided that Gualan needed much more help and we set out to build a Nutrition Center. Since then, we have added to our Gualan Center.
"Forever changed by my mission trip to Guatemala. Being able to witness such extreme poverty and actually make a difference was overwhelming!"

“We may not be able to do it all, but at least now we’ve seen what needs to be done. We’ve gained an understanding that couldn’t be obtained any other way, and made the most beautiful friendships while doing it.”
We are collecting items for Project Robert - Helping Homeless in the Chicagoland area.
