Vision & Eyeglasses
In the communities we serve in Guatemala, access to eye care is extremely limited. Many people have never had a vision screening or the opportunity to own glasses—often simply because they can’t afford them or local services don’t exist. That’s where Hearts In Motion steps in.
Since 2006, our Vision and Eyeglasses Team has provided free vision screenings and distributed thousands of eyeglasses to those in need. Using tools like the Welch Allyn “Spot” Vision Screener, we’re able to assess vision quickly and accurately—even for complex prescriptions and bifocals.
On a typical trip, we distribute more than 600 pairs of reading, prescription, and sunglasses—many people seeing clearly for the first time in years. The joy and amazement on their faces is unforgettable.

Marcia McGinnis
Vision Program Founder
Marcia has been on over 50 trips with HIM, serves on our board and founded the Vision Program in 2006, which has since provided free eye exams and eyeglasses to thousands in Guatemala.
Marcia’s passion stems from personal experience—born prematurely with crossed eyes, she had surgery as a child and has worn glasses ever since. She understands how life-changing access to vision care can be.
Trained by the Lions Club and Visual Compassion, Marcia has equipped volunteers to deliver simple yet powerful vision screenings. Her work has helped children succeed in school, adults return to work, and families thrive—with just the gift of clear sight.
